The only thing that makes a lab grown diamond different from a Natural (mined) diamond is its origin. The optical, physical, and chemical properties of lab grown diamonds are exact same of those of natural diamonds. Lab grown diamonds are atomically identical to earth mined diamonds. Even with a microscope a Jeweler can't tell the difference. Their identity can usually only be determined by gemological laboratories using specialized instruments.
What are the 4Cs of diamonds?
The 4Cs are the universal standards for evaluating diamond quality: Cut (how well the diamond is shaped and faceted), Color (graded from D-colorless to Z-light yellow), Clarity (presence of inclusions or blemishes), and Carat Weight (the diamond's size). Cut is often considered the most important factor as it affects the diamond's brilliance and sparkle.
What does GIA certified mean?
GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certification means your diamond has been independently evaluated and graded by the world's most respected gemological laboratory. A GIA certificate provides an unbiased assessment of your diamond's 4Cs and includes a unique report number for verification, ensuring you know exactly what you're purchasing.
How do I read a diamond certificate?
A diamond certificate (or grading report) includes the diamond's measurements, carat weight, color grade, clarity grade, cut grade, and a plotted diagram showing the diamond's inclusions. It also includes fluorescence, polish, symmetry ratings, and the diamond's unique identification number. We're happy to walk you through every detail during your appointment.
What's the difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds?
The only difference is their origin. Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled laboratory environments, while natural diamonds formed deep within the earth over billions of years. Lab-grown diamonds are atomically, chemically, and optically identical to natural diamonds—even jewelers can't tell them apart without specialized equipment.
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes! Lab-grown diamonds are 100% real diamonds with the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as natural diamonds. They sparkle just as beautifully and are just as durable (both score 10 on the Mohs hardness scale).
Why are lab-grown diamonds less expensive?
Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 40-60% less than natural diamonds because they can be produced more quickly and don't require mining. This allows you to get a larger or higher-quality diamond for your budget while still receiving a genuine diamond.
Will a lab-grown diamond hold its value?
Like natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds retain beauty and durability forever. However, lab-grown diamonds typically have different resale considerations than natural diamonds. We recommend choosing your diamond based on the joy it brings rather than investment potential.
What diamond shape should I choose?
The best shape depends on personal preference and style. Round brilliant diamonds are the most popular and offer maximum sparkle. Fancy shapes like oval, cushion, emerald, and pear each have unique characteristics. Consider your partner's jewelry style and hand shape when deciding.
What's the best color grade for a diamond?
For white diamonds set in white gold or platinum, we recommend G-H color grades, which appear colorless to the naked eye while offering excellent value. For yellow gold settings, you can go slightly lower (I-J) as the warm metal complements the diamond. D-F grades are truly colorless but come at a premium.
What clarity grade should I look for?
For most engagement rings, VS2-SI1 clarity grades offer the best value—any inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. Higher clarity grades (VVS1-VVS2) are excellent for larger diamonds or investment pieces. We can help you find an "eye-clean" diamond that looks flawless without paying for microscopic perfection.
